In accepting the proclamation from the Bartow City Commission for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr/George Gause Day on Monday, Jan. 15, Cheri Kelley added the golf tournament is a new feature to the celebration and is named after one of the most outstanding golfers in American history. It is named for Herbert Dixon, a hall of famer in the Black Golfer’s Hall of Fame and a lifetime Bartow resident, who was an entrant in the tournament.

“He turned 98 this past September and he still plays every day,” she said. And, usually, his score is below his age.
