Since 2005, Frostproof has only lost to Avon Park once during the regular football season.
That streak easily remained in tact as the Bulldogs opened their 2014 season on the road Friday night against the Red Devils, posting a rain-shortened 31-0 victory.
The teams actually only played three quarters because of rain delay that lasted more than 90 minutes, starting late in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs only recent loss came in 2011, by a score of 7-6, in a game they generally dominated but repeatedly self-destructed.
And while there were certainly many miscues Friday — most of them by Avon Park — Frostproof ultimately had little trouble in putting away the Red Devils, who were just 1-9 last season.
Frostproof scored twice before the rain storm hit, and three times after. Even the Frostproof fans were winners; noticeably more Bulldog faithful returned to the stands once the weather broke than did Avon Park supporters.
Virtually every play in the game was run in Avon Park territory as the Red Devils repeatedly were stopped by a swarming Frostproof defense.
The Bulldogs squandered an early opportunity in the first quarter after forcing the Red Devils to give the ball up on downs at their own 35, but Frostproof could not move the ball and subsequently also gave up the ball after for plays.
But on Avon Park’s next possession, the defense capitalized. A high snap from center rolled toward the Red Devil end zone, and was recovered there by Frostproof’s Darion Gardner for a touchdown and a 7-0 Frostproof lead, after Lamar Bobb’s second extra point, with 57 seconds to go in the first quarter.
A teeming rain started to fall early in the game, and lightning sent both teams to the locker room just after the Bulldogs recorded their second touchdown at around 7:30 p.m. Those points came on a fourth-down, two-yard run by D’Angelo Gaines after Frostproof’s Lamar Bobb recovered a bad Avon Park snap at the Red Devil 11.
The game resumed at about 9:10.
Frostproof didn’t need long to stretch its lead to three touchdowns. Avon Park fumbled on its second play and Chester Boatwright finally jumped on the slippery ball at the Red Devil 45. Boatwright also had two pass interceptions.
A 30-yard run by D’Angelo Gaines moved it to the Avon Park 10. And two plays later, Gaines darted in from 9 yards out for a 21-0 Bulldog lead less than a minute into the second quarter.
The Bulldogs converted a fourth down at the Avon Park 31 on their fourth scoring possession later in the quarter. Anthony Gardner, who has some impressive runs on the night, scampered eight yards to get a first down, and three plays later, Kaleel Gaines picked his way around left end from 17 yards out to put Frostproof up 28-0.
Bobb, who was perfect on the night in PAT’s, converted a 24-yard field goal try with 7:11 to play to push Frostproof’s bulge to 31-0. Backup quarterback Josh Outing, who got some quality time under his belt Friday night, had two 13-yard carries on the drive which started at the Avon Park 46.
The Bulldogs, 1-0, are on the road again next Friday when they travel to Tenoroc. Avon Park beat the Titans, 34-6, in last week’s Kickoff Classic pre-season game.
