The past two installments have outlined the grand citrus celebration that occurred in Winter Haven for eight decades. Today, sadly, we’ll discuss its demise.
From 1928-1937 the festival was staged in temporary buildings on that site. In the late ‘30s, four concrete exhibition halls were added for a permanent festival grounds. In 1947 the Lake Silver Amphitheater was constructed and in 1949 the Florida Citrus Building and venerable Nora Mayo Hall were built. About this time, the name was again changed to The Florida Citrus Exposition and the event continued on that site until 1964.
