Don’t be the turkey

The Thanksgiving holidays are fast approaching. Typically, with the holidays come road trips and visiting of family and friends. Many of us will take to the roads for travel this year and, according to AAA, we will be more likely to trek greater distances due to the lower cost of fuel.

With so many extra vehicles on the road during the holidays, our highways become the major areas of concern for law enforcement. Although we will be out in large numbers over the holiday season, it is really up to you, the motorist to “Arrive Alive.” The safest driver on the road is the one who is always thinking about the other drivers — driving defensively. I strongly encourage this behavior. You cannot and should not rely on everyone else to drive appropriately on the highway. With every kind of distraction imaginable out there, the chances are much higher during the holidays to encounter a dangerous situation on the road. Be the smarter driver and anticipate, think, concentrate and drive defensively this year.

If you are planning to leave town for the holidays, don’t forget to let the police department know. We can’t guarantee your complete security, but we can surely check on your property while you are away. The Bartow Police Department’s cars are equipped with computers that let the officers know which properties need to be checked and who, or what, should or should not be present. That is, if you let us know. Give us a call, and we will let the officers know. Don’t be a turkey this year, plan well in advance. Let us know you are leaving and drive defensively.

As always the Bartow Police Department can be reached at 863-534-5034. If you need a security survey done on your property, give the Community Services Team a call. We will be glad to assist you any way we can.

Happy Thanksgiving!
