Henry L. Couey, 89, passed away at home from cancer Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, in Bartow, Fla.
Born Feb. 6, 1925, in Fort White, Fla., he was the son of Champ and Dessie Couey.
Mr. Couey was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bartow, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He worked for many years for W.R. Grace and Company as a maintenance mechanic. Henry, better known as “Papa,” was a longtime Dixie Youth Baseball coach in Bartow.
He is survived by a loving family that includes his wife of 66 years, Jean Couey of Bartow; son, Gary (Deborah) Couey of Brandon, Fla.; daughter, Sandra Stenger of Bartow; brothers, Harold Douberley of Bradenton and Paul Douberley of Palm Bay; grandchildren; Lee (Dannette) Couey, Kim Stenger, Carrie Bell and Hank Stenger; and great-grandchildren; Cody, Kaylee, Caden, Coby, Logan, Kinley, Bradley and Tanner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Roy Couey of Olustee, Fla., and Clarence Couey of Bartow.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow.
Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at the funeral home chapel.
