Boys and girls between 10 and 14 who enjoy basketball should plan now to be at Polk State College in Winter Haven on Sunday, Jan. 12 for a free basketball clinic staged by PSC coaches and players immediately followed by the annual Knights of Columbus Council 7091 Free Throw Championship.
The free clinic, designed to teach basic basketball skills, including free throw shooting, will be from noon-1 p.m. Immediately after the clinic, participating youngsters will have a chance to test their free throw shooting skills by competing in the K of C event, which is also free. Registration for the contest begins at 1 p.m. with competition starting at 1:15 p.m.
All boys and girls between 10 and 14 are eligible for the K of C competition which offers 10 separate divisions: Boys 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14-years-old; Girls 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14. Every contestant will take 15 free throws. The kid who sinks the most shots will be declared the winner in each division. Shoot offs will be used to break ties.
All contestants must have parental consent, fill out an official entry form and present a valid birth certificate or proof of age provided by a school. The age of the contestant as on Jan. 1 will determine which division he or she competes in. Boys and girls who plan to compete in a Free Throw Championship sponsored by another K of C council are not eligible for this one.
“We encourage all boys and girls who enjoy basketball to participate in the PSC clinic as well as the 2014 K of C Youth Free Throw Championship,” event director William “Billy Bob” Morris said, noting that all winners will receive a certificate.
The winners of the Council 7091 competition also will automatically qualify for the district K of C Free Throw Championship. District winners will advance to the regional round where they will compete for berths in the state championship.
