Samarrippas ends college career sixth in assists per game

Senior Jeremiah Samarrippas has completed his college basketball career.

The Bartow High School graduate was a four-year starter, the past two for Tennessee Tech University after two at Southern Methodist University, where he was a team captain as a sophomore.

He played in all 33 games this season, leading the squad in minutes per game and with 4.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He had season highs of 11 assists and five steals.

Samarrippas ranked sixth in assists per game and ninth in steals per game in the Ohio Valley Conference.

He averaged 10.5 points, third on the team, and scored in double figures in 20 games, with a high of 22 points.

More men’s basketball

Freshman reserve Marcel White played in all 30 of Jacksonville University’s games. The Lake Wales resident averaged 4.9 points and finished fourth on the team with eight blocked shots.

Softball

Outfielder Gwen Jones led University of South Alabama with 15 stolen bases in 21 games. Frequently used as a pinch runner, the junior from Bartow High was thrown out twice on attempts.

Junior outfielder Sydney Jones hit .361 through 16 games, including 12 starts, for Webber International University. The Frostproof High School product had seven runs batted in.

Tashayla Irvis is a freshman outfielder for Florida A&M University. Formerly at Lake Wales High School, she hit .133 in eight games.
