Carissa Misch has completed her ice hockey career at Smith College (Mass.).
The Bartow resident was a four-year member of the ice hockey club. She played forward this season, finishing with one goal and three assists, according to club president Thalia Berard.
Misch was among a number of women to join the club without any experience. She played lacrosse her junior and senior years when she attended All Saints Academy in Winter Haven.
“I was really interested in it,” the recent graduate said about the sport so popular in the North. “Obviously I didn’t have an opportunity (to play here). I decided to try something new.”
She said she didn’t play much as a freshman because she was learning to skate. “The best way to learn is learn by doing,” she said.
“It’s hard to learn a new sport,” she said. “You don’t necessarily know how to skate.”
She played more minutes each year, and Berard said Misch averaged about 20 minutes in each of the 15 45-minute games this season. Misch said her lone goal came from in front of the net during the Senior Game.
Florida State University senior Josh Delph, a Bartow High School graduate, is on the roster for the North Adams SteepleCats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Also out of Bartow High, pitcher Joey Starling is on the roster for the Winter Garden Squeeze of the Florida Collegiate Summer League. He was a freshman for Stanford University.
