Area braces for cold night

Some beachgoers took a stroll on Englewood Beach Monday morning as a cold front began to bear down on on the area.

Workers at Worden Farm in Punta Gorda cover cold-sensitive eggplants with frost sheets Monday to protect them from cold weather forecasted for Monday night and tonight. Eva Worden, co-founder, said small-scale gardeners can also protect their plants this way.

Unseasonably cold weather overnight Monday and another cold blast predicted for tonight prompted officials to open shelters to protect people from the cold.

Charlotte, DeSoto and Sarasota County’s Emergency Management Offices open cold shelters when low temperatures could become a safety concern for the homeless population.
