This whimsical purple alligator was created on hand-painted silk with quilting, emboridery and embellishments, and is six feet wide. It's just one of many artworks on display at the Art of the River.

The DeSoto Arts and Humanities Council invites the community to come celebrate the Peace River and the way of life in the Florida Heartland. At the Rio de la Paz Festival on Saturday, along with a major art exhibit, you can enjoy several displays from artists, craftsmen, local authors, groups and businesses. The festival uses the Spanish name for the river in honor of last year’s celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Spanish arrival in Florida.

The Mosaic Express will be there, a bus converted to a traveling display about the phosphate mining process. Several environmental groups will have exhibits as well, including Peace River Audubon, Florida Trail Association, Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program, Friends of Horse Creek, Southwest Florida Water management District and Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Last year’s favorite, the Florida Skunk Rescue organization will be on hand with everything you need to know about making one of these furry creatures a part of your life. There will be entertainment and food vendors to help you enjoy the day.
