DeSoto County School Superinten-dent Karyn Gary told the School Board Tuesday evening that the district’s net cost to clean up the recent mercury spill at DeSoto Middle School was approximately $39,000.
Finance Director Marcia Saulo said about $28,000 of the final cost was for actual environmental cleanup, while the cost to remove and replace carpet, paint and for other repairs was $14,000. However, the district was able to save some costs during the week the school was closed in transportation, staffing etc., totaling around $3,400. The final net cost was much less than the original estimate of $100,000 and the district is talking with its insurance carrier.
