Injured bird gets a leg up

A family of sandhill cranes that frequents the Punta Gorda Walmart area was recently reunited with Wally, a crane that had been injured and cared for by the Peace River Wildlife Center. But the family failed to accept him back into the fold.

Wally, a sandhill crane that was injured by a car near Walmart in April, was reunited with his family Sunday, but the other birds apparently would not accept him, wildlife officials said.

PUNTA GORDA — A family of sandhill cranes is still wandering around the Punta Gorda Walmart area, after a juvenile with the group was struck by a vehicle and had its leg broken a week ago.

However the injured bird — which is recovering at the Peace River Wildlife Center in Punta Gorda — should be reunited with its three kin soon.
