In its ongoing efforts to make the city an attractive place for cyclists, Punta Gorda is pushing for cleaner, safer bike paths along the U.S. 41 bridges.
This week, the Florida Department of Transportation painted directional signs on stretches of roadway along U.S. 41 over the Barron Collier and A.W. Gilchrist bridges (north and southbound U.S. 41, respectively) that clearly delineate the bike lanes from vehicle traffic. The signs are better, clearer and more accurate than previous ones, which seemed to discourage bicyclists from the bridges completely, city planner Mitch Austin said.
