Courage is not something we develop. We are all gifted with it at birth. This is a hard-won secret that comes to me from my own bully battles, facing danger as a military pilot, and through helping my students deal with bullies. It is something I learned from Vice Admiral Stockdale’s talks while I attended the US Naval Academy. The Admiral was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for over seven torture-filled years.
I spent a lot of time under the false belief that you develop courage. The courage that we all need is already inside us. The problem with courage, though, is that she often hides herself from us.
