New pests always seem to eventually get to our area — the rugose spiraling whitefly, for example. Not that I want to be the bearer of bad news, but a new pest was positively identified in Charlotte County in September — laurel wilt.
This is a fungal disease specifically carried by a certain kind of beetle that spreads the disease as it feeds on its host trees, specifically redbay and avocado. This pest has moved down the east coast and has now traveled over into the west coast of Florida, including Manatee, Sarasota and DeSoto counties. This article is just a heads up to be on the lookout for this pest.
