Without question, the wise men are the most mysterious characters of Christmas. We’re not sure where they come from, though Matthew tells us it was somewhere in the east; nor do we know just when they arrived or how many wise ones made their way to Bethlehem to find the newborn king.
We’ve assumed there were three wise men because of their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, but three types of gifts could have been brought by any number of wise men. Some estimate there may have been more than a hundred who made their journey from afar following a star. And, according to the Bible, they arrived after Christmas, finding Mary and Joseph and the baby in a house in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:11).
