A garden journal will help you become a better gardener. To start, all you need are a spiral 100-sheet notebook, and graph paper to draw a garden plan.

Do you plan your garden — or do you just plant what strikes your fancy when you’re shopping for plants or seed? Did you grow way too much of something and not enough of other things? Improve your gardening skills by starting a garden journal.

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. To start, all you need is a spiral 100-sheet notebook. Go through and number every other page with the dates for one week: week #1—Jan. 1-7, week #2—Jan. 8-14, etc. Give yourself a vacation, skip two weeks in July; you won’t be doing much in the garden then.
