Wilson Williams perfected his musical talents in Detroit during Motown’s heyday, but he never experienced the prejudice so many black groups and performers suffered until he brought his band to a small Florida town in the early 1990s.

“I can’t even remember the name of the town, but during a break one night, a couple of our guys danced with some white women in the audience. The next day our manager said, ‘Pack up, we’re leaving.’ I said, ‘But we have a two-week contract.’ And he said, ‘If you take the stage tonight, you’re gonna be shot.”’
