A decision to end maternity services at DeSoto Memorial Hospital could come next week. The hospital’s board of directors has wrestled with the unit’s future since November. The matter is more urgent as a much larger health-provider ends its maternity services deal at DeSoto Memorial on Jan. 31. The DMH board is scheduled for a special 3 p.m. meeting next Thursday (Jan. 4) in the McSwain room. It’s open to the public.
Since November, hospital CEO Vince Sica has given the seven-member board to basic choices: help the maternity unit survive, or to close it, shuffle some staff and let others go. It’s likely he’ll do something similar next Thursday.
