Prioritizing for 2014

Our view: BOCC should place the construction of a new jail facility at the top of its priority list in 2014.

The ink on the final version of the county’s 2013-14 budget had barely dried before yet another request from staff to build (or rebuild) a new structure for Fire Station 1 was presented to the Board of County Commissioners.

Meanwhile, after two failed attempts this year to secure a millage hike to support DeSoto Memorial Hospital, CEO Vince Sica intends to ask the county for a half-cent sales tax on the ballot in 2014. The reason? To give the hospital approximately $1.5 million yearly to help plug a budget hole that’s hemorrhaging nearly $3 million annually.
