I had no idea that possums had such longevity, especially since I’ve seen so many of them who’ve wound up as road kill along the highways and byways here in the South. I reckon ol’ Tater is an exception, since he turned 30 this month. Or he’s at least better at dodging traffic than his marsupial brothers and sisters!
Tater H. Bluff, or “Tater,” for short, came along in January of 1984 in a newspaper called The Desoto County Times, which was only three months old itself. I was writing odds and ends for it, and editor Tom Wason began talking to me about cartooning. I’d doodled cartoons of family and friends for years, and done some artwork for The Arcadian a year or so earlier, so why not?
