To all of our friends and neighbors, I’d like to add some important information to last week’s article titled, “DMH near the bottom of patient safety survey.” Healthcare is a very complicated business and looking at numbers and statistics without fully understanding their meaning can lead one to the wrong conclusion.
The Joint Commission is an organization hired by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to evaluate hospital performance. The Joint Commission conducts unannounced hospital surveys. Presently the Joint Commission surveys hospitals once every three years. Its rules focus on patient safety and the quality of care provided to our patients. Hospitals must comply with all of these rules and regulations to remain in good standing with CMS. DeSoto Memorial Hospital is fully accredited by The Joint Commission, with the last survey being completed in Feb. 2013.
