The Florida Press Club awarded Steve Bauer, The Arcadian’s assistant editor, with the first place prize for Public Safety Reporting at its annual banquet Saturday. Bauer won the award for Class D papers (weekly editions) for his April 4, 2013 story, “Public safety risks revealed — DCSO’s aging building in need of repairs.” The story outlines many of the problems existing at the cramped, crumbling DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, from a failing elevator in the jail to rusting water pipes and exposed wires.
This was the first year Bauer, who started working for The Arcadian in February, had entered the Press Club contest.
