Rick Pucci, the head of Community Christian School in Port Charlotte, believes the state’s Tax Credit Scholarship program gives parents a choice they typically would not have — a choice to send their children to a private school.

But school district officials in Charlotte and Sarasota counties are not so pleased with the program, believing it takes money away from the state that could be used to fund public education. Charlotte County Superintendent Doug Whittaker and School Board member Lee Swift pulled no punches when they voiced their opposition to a proposed expansion of the voucher program.
