Shirley Begue McCormick, 89, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at home in Naples, Florida.
Shirley was born in Perry, Florida, and grew up in Cross City, Florida, the youngest of eight children with six older brothers. After high school, she attended nursing school at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach. As a Registered Nurse, she began her nursing career in Trenton, Florida, where she met her husband. Following a break to raise her children, she resumed her career at DeSoto Memorial Hospital in Arcadia, Florida, from where she retired as the head of the operating room. She resided in Arcadia for 39 years before moving to Naples in 2001.
Shirley loved her family and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. who called her “Grandma Sugar.” Shirley was a wonderful mother and role model for her three daughters. She was an avid reader and a whiz at crossword puzzles. She always enjoyed a good cup of coffee with friends and dessert after dinner (or anytime). Shirley schooled many of us over her lifetime on the importance of wearing lipstick.
She is survived by her three daughters, Constance Alsbrook, Yvonne (Don) Passell, and Ginny (Don) Grind; four grandchildren, Meredith (Jeremy) Kroll, James (Meredith) Alsbrook, Robert Alsbrook, and Stephen (Nichole) Alsbrook; and three great-grandchildren, Caroline, Jackson and Desmond. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Herbert A. McCormick.
A memorial service will be held graveside at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
