Carrie “Eleanora” Keen, 78, of Arcadia, Fla., went home to her Lord and Savior, Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014.
Eleanora, also known by many as “Koge (pronounced ko-gee),” was born May 25, 1935, in Arcadia, to Jesse and Madie Summerall Griffin.
She attended school in DeSoto County, Fla., and graduated from DeSoto High in 1953. Eleanora’s love story began when she met the ever-so-handsome and charming Harvey N. “Bo” Keen. They were married by a Punta Gorda, Fla., Justice of the Peace in 1955, and shortly thereafter began their family. Eleanora was a woman with a strong work ethic, one which she helped instill into her children.
She worked for over 30 years for the DeSoto County School District. Eleanora started as a school bus driver, and would work in the cafeteria during the school hours, and then see that her bus full of children got home safely. Once home, she tended to her own children, husband, home and the home ranch. She later worked as a Teacher’s Aide and retired from the Education System in 1996. Her free time was spent with family and talking on the phone. Eleanora never missed an episode of “Wheel of Fortune,” and made grocery shopping look like a sport. She took great care of Bo. She was a very loving wife, mother, sister and “Nanny” to her grandkids. Eleanora will be deeply missed by all of those who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Harvey N. “Bo” Keen of Arcadia; sons, Newt (Linda) Keen of Arcadia, and Tim Keen of Arcadia; sister, Theda (Lee) Swails of Wauchula, Fla.; grandchildren, Jenny (David) Cross of Arcadia, Kristen Keen of Arcadia, and Destiny, Stormy and KC Keen of Arcadia; and great-grandchildren, Clint and Harley Cross. Eleanora was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Woodrow Griffin, Bobby Griffin and RV Griffin; and sister, Addie Mae Langford.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at North Hillsborough Baptist Church in Arcadia. Pastor Ellis Cross will officiate. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Eleanora’s name can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, St. Jude Tribute Program, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908. Online condolences can be made at www.pongerkaysgrady.com.
