James H. “Jim” McAnly, 73, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, in Arcadia.
He was born Nov. 25, 1940, in Arcadia, to William “Slim” and Margaret Hickman McAnly.
Jim was a graduate of DeSoto County High School, Class of 1958. He graduated from the University of Georgia and Stetson University College of Law. Jim practiced law in DeSoto County, Fla., offering legal services to his community for over 40 years. He was an avid golfer until his health prevented him from playing. Jim enjoyed woodworking and restoring antique furniture. He collected guns all his life, and was an excellent marksman. Jim loved target shooting with his family and close friends. He was a member of the Arcadia Elks Lodge for many years, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve, where he served with the JAG unit. Jim was of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Stephanie McAnly; his children, James Ross (Sarah) McAnly of Leesburg, Fla., Jamie Harmon McAnly of Wellington, Fla., Kirsten Prebianca (Barry) Flanik of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dana Prebianca (James) Smith of Franklin, Tenn., and Larry “Chip” Furr of Arcadia; his eight grandchildren, Austin McAnly, Reese McAnly, Cassidy Furr, Luke Flanik, Kate Flanik, Jackson Harris, Brady Smith and Skyler Smith; his brother, William (Bette) McAnly of Sebring, Fla.; and his sister, Kerry (Peter) Wegner of Naples, Fla. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Slim and Margaret McAnly.
A gathering and celebration of James McAnly’s life will be held at from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at the chapel of Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, 50 N. Hillsborough Ave., Arcadia. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jimmie Collins officiating. Online condolences may be made at www.pongerkaysgrady.com.
