Charlie Powell Mercer, 94, of Arcadia, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at his home.
He was born May 16, 1919, in Wauchula, Fla., the son of T.O. “Tip” and Ruby Mercer.
Charlie was of the Baptist faith and a member of First Baptist Church of Arcadia. He was an entrepreneur and owner of Mercer’s Men and Western Wear. Charlie was a farmer in later years and drove a tractor until the age of 90. He loved people, animals and his family.
Charlie is survived by his two sons and daughter-in-laws, Cary Mike (Kaye) Mercer of Arcadia, and Charlie (Arluin) Mercer of Richton, Miss.; five grandchildren, Ashley Mercer Grimaldi of Tampa, Fla., Nicole Mercer of Tampa, Betsy Mercer McKee (Shawn) of Brandon, Miss., Shawn Mercer (Katie) of Richton, Miss., and Charles Mercer of Olive Branch, Miss.; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Louise Huff Mercer; and his daughter, Judy Ann Mercer.
A visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at the chapel of Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Homes, 50 N. Hillsborough Ave., Arcadia, FL 34266. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Roy Arms officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
