Kenneth N. Platt, 83, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at home, with family by his side.

He was born June 22, 1930, in Lake City, Mich., to D.L. and Lola Mae Ivey Platt.

Not only was Kenneth considered to be a lifelong resident of Hardee and DeSoto counties, Fla., he was a member of one of Florida’s prominent pioneer families and a sixth-generation Florida Cracker. He served our country in the U.S. Army, and enjoyed telling stories about his service days. Kenneth was a former member of the American Legion. He was of the Baptist faith, and member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Kenneth started his career at Bassler Engine Shop in Nocatee, Fla., and later operated the Snapper Mower Center in Arcadia. He learned his trade as a mechanic under the direction of Al Bassler. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, barbecuing, reminiscing of earlier times in Arcadia, and, above all, spending time with his family.

Kenneth is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Platt of Arcadia; daughters, Debra L. (Brad) Burtscher of Arcadia, and Julie M. (Bobby) Fussell of Arcadia; grandchildren, Lacie M. (Mike) Klossner, Jared S. Hart, Robert L. Fussell II and Justin Q. Fussell; and great-grandchildren, Kiersten and Alaina Klossner. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gloria “Sister” Ingram; and his parents.

The visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home in Arcadia. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Limestone Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Lily Cemetery in Lily, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kenneth’s honor may be made to Tidewell Hospice, 917 N. Arcadia Ave., Arcadia, FL 34266. Online condolences can be made at www.pongerkaysgrady.com.
