Dommie Jean Delaney

Dommie Jean Delaney, of Arcadia, Fla., had her life come to an end Wednesday, March 26, 2014.

She was born April 24, 1923, in Palatka, Fla.

Dommie was a graduate of Smith Brown High School and attended Edward Waters College. She met and married Alvin Steven Delaney, they lived in Boca Grande, Fla., until 1963 when they moved back to Arcadia. Dommie retired from G.P. Woods State Hospital. She was an active member of Mt. Zion AME Church where she was superintendent of the Sunday school, member of Stewardess Board, Senior Choir, the Lay Organization and the Simon-Johnson Women’s Missionary Society. She had a lifelong passion for teaching and nurturing children; and has touched the lives of many children, evident by her numerous God-children.

She leaves to cherish her memory children, Sherian, Alvin, Dominic, and Karen; grandchildren, Patria, Synetta, Lucy, Zola, Nichelle, Stephanie, Jerald, Joshua, Jacquette, Anwar, Irene, Randy, Katrina and Anthony; 29 great-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Deoris Sally; brothers-in-law, James, Sidney and John; and many nieces, nephews, Godchildren and friends. Dommie was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin in 2006.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, Friday, April 4, 2014, at Hickson Funeral Home. Funeral Service at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Mt. Zion AME Church, 256 S. Orange Ave., Arcadia. Burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
