Elwood J. “Woody” Hannon, 80, of Lake Suzy, Fla., passed away Saturday, May 24, 2014, surrounded by family, at Tidewell Hospice Inc. in Port Charlotte, Fla.
He was born Aug. 25, 1933, in Winsted, Conn., and moved to Lake Suzy 14 years ago from Newington, Conn.
Woody was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War. He was also the Captain of the West Hartford, Conn., Fire Department for 30 years. After moving to Florida with his family, Woody started working at Publix for many years, where he met many friends and co-workers. He loved to fish, especially going on his yearly fishing trips to Canada with his son and friends from the PA Club. Woody was very active, coaching his children’s numerous sports teams. He was a semi-Professional Soccer player. Woody enjoyed many summers at their beach house in Old Saybrook, Conn. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, neighbor and friend to all, and will forever be missed by all who loved and knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Charlene (Dee) Hannon; three daughters, Kimberly (Chris) Glenney of North Port, Fla., Stacey Hannon of Rocky Hill, Conn., and Tamara (Evan) Bouchard of North Port; his son, Michael (Jennifer) Hannon of Milford, N.H.; a sister, Eileen (Ron) Bouchard of Farmington, Conn.; five grandchildren, Michael Hurley, Travis Glenney, Courtney Neill, and Matthew and Sean Hannon; one great-granddaughter, Madelena Hurley; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Maggie. Woody was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Catherine (nee Nash) Hannon; three brothers, Harold, Larry and Bobby Hannon; and his sister, Delores Battalino.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel. A Memorial Mass and Inurnment with military honors will be held at a later date in Newington.
