After deliberating for two hours on Tuesday, a jury convicted Luis Omar Alvarez, 35, of sexual battery involving one of his former students.
Court records show Alvarez, now residing in Melbourne, Fla., was tried on two counts of sexual battery against a person over 12 but under 18 years old where the defendant had custodial authority, a first-degree felony, and was convicted of one count. He was taken to the DeSoto County Jail Tuesday evening.
