The DeSoto County girls junior varsity basketball team won their opening game of the year 30-24 over the visiting Port Charlotte Pirates Nov. 11. The game nearly didn’t take place.

When the game was added to the schedule Oct. 10, DeSoto Athletic Director Jarrett Zolkos said an email was sent out to officials, ensuring they would be available for the game. When game day arrived, however, the 5:30 p.m. start time came and went without a referee in sight.
