FORT MYERS — The biggest cheer from the DeSoto County High School bench during the Bulldogs’ playoff game Thursday was at the end when coach Bumper Hay announced the boys team had won its district title.

But for the Bulldog girls, it wasn’t a small thing that they played 80 minutes on Thursday in a 6-0 loss to Class 2A powerhouse Bishop Verot — thereby avoiding the mercy rule.
