Downtown may lose some parking spaces

This little-used turn lane on West Tampa Avenue east of Nokomis Avenue may be removed to make way for two full eastbound lanes: one for cars turning left and one for through traffic and cars turning right.

These three parking spaces at the northwest corner of West Venice Avenue and Nassau Street - and three at the southwest corner - could be lost in order to meet Florida Department of Transportation visibility standards. Installing a stop sign might save the spaces.

The Venice City Council has put a lot of time and not a little money into trying to improve traffic flow and alleviate parking shortages downtown.

So there’s a bit of irony in City Engineer Kathleen Weeden’s update to the City Council Tuesday on the downtown road-paving project: Fixing the roads is likely to cost some parking spaces.
