Across from Charlotte High School, a small crowd held up signs Thursday with messages like, “Childhood is not a mental illness” and “Stop Baker Act Abuse.” The protest was organized by Hilary Caskey, a concerned parent who was outraged when her 16-year-old son Solan was taken to Charlotte Behavioral Health Care for an involuntary examination last school year.

Under the Baker Act, both adults and minors can be taken to a mental health facility by police or mental health professionals if there is reason to believe they have a mental illness and are a threat to themselves or others.
