Jail serves as shelter for people, pets

The Venice Police Department building on Ridgewood Avenue was used to shelter 80 first responders and family members, and pets, during Hurricane Irma.

The aging Venice Police Department building — just repaired this past year for leaks and scheduled to be rebuilt after a bond passed by voters in November — served as a shelter for more than 80 first responders during Hurricane Irma.

Police Chief Tom Mattmuller said the city fared “very well” through the Cat 2 storm.
