The state has denied applications for new South County hospitals submitted by Sarasota Memorial Hospital and Universal Health Services.

SMH, the Sarasota County public hospital, had sought a certificate of need for a 90-bed hospital on land it owns at the southeast corner of Laurel and Pinebrook roads, in Venice, while Universal was proposing a 120-bed hospital to be built in North Port, where SMH operates a free-standing emergency room.
