Homeless facility at bad location, residents say

Citizens representing the East Nokomis Revitalization Group — Nancy Eaton, Dan Simic, Ted Weinberger and Dave Arbuckle — met last week, requesting that Sarasota County commissioners hold those involved in establishing the Center of Hope at 110 Colonia Lane responsible to meet legal requirements for the change of use of this empty property. County officials said the facility is allowed by code in the area and that a permit for interior renovations was granted.

Even while acknowledging issues with homeless people in the area, some residents and business owners of Nokomis think a facility intended to help the homeless and needy belongs elsewhere.

After an article in the Wednesday Gondolier Sun about plans by the Center of Hope to open a facility at 110 East Colonia Lane, Nancy Eaton, Dan Simic, Bill Romack and Eugenie Lanius appeared before the County Commission that day with questions and concerns.
