ENGLEWOOD — A Port Charlotte man was arrested and nearly 10 pounds of marijuana seized after a package containing the substance was delivered to an Englewood area house. On Friday, members of the Sheriff’s Office’s Narcotics Unit received information from a law enforcement agency in California that a package that possibly contained narcotics was supposed to be delivered to a house in the 10000 block of Kidron Avenue in Englewood. Unit members began a surveillance of the address and watched as a brown box was delivered to the house mid-morning. Shortly after it was delivered, a man arrived at the address, moved the box from the front door to the side of the house and left the area. About a half-hour later, another man arrived and moved the package into the house.

At about 1 p.m., Javier Christopher Rodriguez, 30, of the 5100 block of Melbourne Street in Port Charlotte, backed a white Nissan into the driveway and went inside the house. A few minutes later, Rodriguez came outside carrying the brown package and put it in the trunk. The Sheriff’s Office’s Aviation Unit observed Rodriguez’ Nissan driving through residential neighborhoods in a reckless manner at a high rate of speed. The air unit maintained sight of the vehicle until members of the Street Crimes Unit were able to get to the area to stop the Nissan. When a narcotics-trained K-9 alerted on the vehicle, deputies searched the Nissan and recovered the package from the trunk. Inside the box, detectives found 10 triple-vacuum-sealed bags containing a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana. The total weight of the cannabis was 9.83 pounds. Rodriguez was charged with possession of cannabis with the intent to distribute, possession of cannabis over 20 grams, possession of paraphernalia and reckless driving. He was released on a $13,500 bond. Anyone with knowledge of illegal drug activity is asked to please call the CCSO Narcotics Unit at 941-575-2157, or Crime Stoppers at 800-780-TIPS (8477).
