PORT CHARLOTTE — A Port Charlotte man was arrested Friday by members of the Sheriff’s Office’s Computer Crimes Unit, with the assistance of the FBI’s Fort Myers Child Exploitation Task Force, after instances of child pornography were found on his computer. In mid-May 2014, Computer Crimes detectives were conducting undercover Internet investigations concerning the distribution of images of child pornography in Charlotte County. During the investigation, they were able to download a video that was confirmed through sources to be of a young girl engaging in sexual activity with a man. Later in May, they found that the same IP address was advertising additional child pornography images or videos available for download.
The detectives subpoenaed information from the Internet provider and learned that the computer IP address that was being used came back to Geoffrey Marcus Gottfried, 29, of the 21200 block of Meehan Avenue in Port Charlotte, as the subscriber. On Friday, members of the Computer Crimes Unit and the FBI’s Fort Myers Child Exploitation Task Force served a search warrant at Gottfried’s residence. As part of the search warrant, they checked his computer and found four videos that depicted children engaging in sexual activity, one video that had two different children in it. Gottfried was arrested on five counts of possessing an image of a sexual performance by a child as a result of finding the four videos that depicted five different children. Detectives learned that Gottfried was on probation at the time of his arrest and was also charged with violation of probation. He is being held without bond at the Charlotte County Jail.
