A Punta Gorda man was arrested Friday on animal cruelty charges for allegedly failing to provide proper care for his pit bull, Cricket, whom he knew had cancer. Cricket had to be euthanized because she was in so much pain, Animal Control officials said.

A Punta Gorda man is facing an animal cruelty charge for allegedly not seeking proper care for his dog, which had be to be euthanized because it had cancer.

The owner of the 10-year-old pit bull, named Cricket, claims he knew the dog was ailing but couldn’t afford to put her down. However, Charlotte County Animal Control officials say that’s not an excuse to leave an animal in pain.
