Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and other researchers are monitoring closely a large red tide algal bloom north of Tampa.
While posing no immediate threat to Southwest Florida, FWC officials said the bloom appears to be moving south and southeast. FWC spokesman Brandon Basino described the bloom as 80 miles long and up to 50 miles wide, in waters 40 to 90 miles offshore between Dixie and Pasco counties.
