The William Allen McElya pioneer family

Share this story:

PHOTO PROVIDED BY DIANA HARRIS

This photo is thought to be of the store William Allen McElya built. It was located on what for a short time time was known as, McElya Island, today we know it as Little Gasparilla Island. The wood for the store supposedly was salvaged from the Grove City Hotel which had burned. McElya’s store catered to the fisherfolk of the Placida and Boca Grande area. Little is known about the McElya family. It is known, about 1920, Mr. McElya became postmaster for the Gasparilla and Placida area post office. Photo circa 1910.

Editor’s note: The following is a letter by Ruth McElya thought to have been written in the late 1950s and is reproduced as it was written with a few grammar errors.
