The Rev. Dan Betzer, senior pastor of First Assembly of God in Fort Myers since 1987, previously spent 17 years as the radio voice of “Revival Time.” I still remember a mid-1980s sermon he preached on that Assemblies of God weekly program.
Titled “Whatever Happened to the Great Hymns of the Church?,” it reminded of a quote from the early 18th century by Charles and John Wesley’s father, Samuel. He called the rhyming Psalms of his day “scandalous doggerel.” Isaac Watts, often considered “The Father of English Hymnody,” said the hymns of that era were “atrocious.”
