Tax season opens in four days. The IRS begins processing 2013 individual tax returns starting Jan. 30. To avoid becoming a victim of tax identity theft, file as early as possible.
That’s because scammers only need your name and Social Security number to create a new address, report phony income and withholding information. Then they electronically file “your” return, directly depositing a refund to their bank account or prepaid debit card, avoiding having to cash a paper check requiring a photo ID.
