In 1845, when Florida joined the union, Hillsboro County extended from above Tampa to below Charlotte Harbor.
In 1856, Manatee County was sliced out of the southern part of Hillsboro, and in 1887 a land division split Manatee and DeSoto County was formed. In 1921, Charlotte and Sarasota counties formed, and that was the division we live with still.
