H a ve you ever attended a party when unexpected guests crashed it? If so, how did the invited guests respond? Tomorrow is Pentecost Sunday, a day that celebrates the birthday of the Church. At sunrise that morning, 120 believers who’d gathered together “in one accord and in one place” (Acts 2:1) couldn’t have foreseen what would happen. Nor would they have expected a bunch of party crashers to accuse them of being drunk on new wine.
Those crowded into that upper room were a remnant of the “more than 500 brothers and sisters” (see 1 Corinthians 15:6) at Jesus’ ascension 10 days earlier. Luke 24:49 tells us that Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to all who “returned to Jerusalem to wait to be endued with power from on high.” Sadly, those who didn’t wait for the Holy Spirit’s arrival missed an exhilarating experience — the birth of the early Church.
