The proposed extension of the Charlotte County 1 percent sales tax extension represents all that is wrong with government, in my mind. The very act of asking for an extension breaks the original promise to the citizens that the 1 percent tax would sunset in 1998. And it reinforces our belief that the appetite for government spending is insatiable.
The commissioners would do well to remember that their predecessors were not the best stewards of our money. Murdock Village and the Rotonda utility lawsuits are only two examples of poor financial decisions. It would be in this commission’s best interest to recognize the distrust and to work to alleviate some of it. Squelching citizens free speech won’t help their cause.
