The good ol’ local circus days of yore

When the circus train came back to Venice, after being on the road for months, it was always met by the health department. It was the law that the costumes, headdresses, animal blankets were confiscated and destroyed. It was thought they were full of germs since the circus had traveled so extensively across the country. It was, of course, the mild weather that originally made Florida a popular winter haven for carnival and show people, and for circuses.

Our immediate area, starting at Venice, going through Englewood and on down to El Jobean, is just stuffed full of circus, carnival and show-biz lore.
